TRANSITION - De danske styrker i Afganistan
Transition, The Danish Forces i Afghanistan
In 2010, Mathilde Fenger applied to the Danish Defense to travel with the Danish troops to the Helmand Province in Afghanistan. Her goal was to observe and depict the Danish personnel on their mission.
This journey resulted in a series of paintings, most of which can be seen at the Royal Danish Military Academy at Frederiksberg Castle in Copenhagen.
Prior to this, the series was exhibited at the National Historic Museum at Frederiksborg Castle, which inspired the museum to renew its initiative of documenting Danish international missions for its collection.
Mathilde Fenger was commissioned to depict the war in Afghanistan. Peter Carlsen focused on the war in Libya, and Peter Martensen depicted the Navy's mission at the Horn of Africa. These three paintings are now part of the museum's permanent collection.
"Transition, The Danish Forces in Afghanistan" is Mathilde Fenger’s historical painting representing Denmark in Afghanistan.
The painting is a historical composition, a crafted work featuring symbols from key themes of the war.
Its title refers to the final phase of the international mission, the transition, where NATO forces handed over the security responsibilities to the Afghan forces.
